Overview of Employer Sponsored Pathways

Employer-sponsored visas allow Australian businesses to nominate skilled international workers to fill genuine skill shortages where no suitably qualified Australian worker can be found.

Core Employer Sponsored Visa Categories

1. Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (Subclass 482 / TSS)

Allows employers to sponsor skilled workers for up to 4 years across Short-term, Medium-term, or Labour Agreement streams.

  • Requires at least 2 years of relevant full-time work experience
  • Direct transition to permanent residency under the Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) stream after 2 years
  • Exempt from GSM points test

2. Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186 / ENS)

A direct Permanent Residency visa for skilled workers sponsored by an Australian employer.

  • Direct Entry (DE) Stream: Requires a positive skills assessment and 3 years relevant post-qualification work experience.
  • Temporary Residence Transition (TRT) Stream: For 482 visa holders working for the same nominating employer for 2 years.

3. Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional (Subclass 494)

A 5-year regional provisional visa enabling regional Australian employers to sponsor skilled workers in designated regional areas with a direct PR pathway via Subclass 191.

The 3-Stage Employer Visa Process

  1. Stage 1: Standard Business Sponsorship (SBS): Legal approval of the Australian employing company by the Department of Home Affairs.
  2. Stage 2: Position Nomination: Demonstrating genuine need, Labour Market Testing (LMT), and compliance with the Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold (TSMIT - AUD $73,150).
  3. Stage 3: Visa Application: Demonstrating candidate qualifications, experience, skills assessment, health, and character requirements.
